In Costa Rica alone, nearly 700 people fall acutely ill every year, and at least 30 die from toxic pesticidesthat were banned long ago in the United States! Just imagine what you’re drinking in with your “exotic coffee”…literally dozens of toxic pesticides that are banned here in the US!
Organic coffee plantatons also follow more long-term, sustainable strategies for preserving biodiversity. U.S. sales of organic coffee totaled nearly $90 million in 2008, up more than 40 percent over the previous year.Other earth-friendly coffee designations include Fair Trade, which requires coffee growers to adhere to basic environmental management principals, as well as fair labor and trade standards. Fair Trade There’s also the Bird Friendly(r) designation, which can be used only by growers who meet inspection and certificationrequirements of the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. While all Bird Friendly coffees are also certified organic, please note that not all Fair Trade products are.
